Cardiac Care Earns Five Stars!
The sixth annual release of the HealthGrades Hospital Report Card gives Shore Health System a five star rating for excellence in cardiac care. Each year Health Grades analyzes quality of care at more than 5,000 hospitals across the country and publishes ratings based on the performance of that hospital. Less than 15 percent of the hospitals across the country in each category receive a Five Star designation for outstanding performance in patient care. Shore Health System’s score places it among the best for cardiac care.
Cardiac care joins orthopedic surgery and the Joint Replacement Center at The Memorial Hospital at Easton as recipients of this national achievement.

Center for Cardio-Pulmonary Fitness and Wellness
Your recent cardiac event has had a significant impact on your life. It may have limited your ability to work and participate in family activities.
Shore Health System's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a three-phase program designed to return each patient to an optimal level of physical, psychological, social and vocational well-being, and certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Your doctor has probably already discussed the risks and benefits of treatment for heart disease. Some risk factors, such as age or family history, cannot be changed. But cardiac rehabilitation can improve cardiovascular function, promote healthier lifestyles, facilitate strategies for health improvement and reduce risk of heart disease.
Eligible Patients:
You are eligible for cardiac rehabilitation if you:
- are recovering from heart attack (myocardial infarction)
- have had open heart surgery, angina, angioplasty, heart transplant
- are considered at risk for developing coronary artery disease
- want to participate in a structured exercise program to reduce risk of heart disease
Your Team
Your professional cardiac rehabilitation team consists of Shore Health System physicians, exercise physiologists, nurses, dietitians, therapists, social workers and educators. Cardiac Rehabilitation staff work closely with your referring physician or other referring facility. Shore Health System's Cardiac Rehabilitation facilities are located at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge and The Memorial Hospital at Easton. They feature state-of-the-art exercise equipment and are staffed by trained health professionals.
Phase I - Inpatient Program
Your recovery begins in the hospital. Rehabilitation during Phase I focuses on education - for you and your family - so that you can have all the support you need as you begin your cardiac rehabilitation program.
Phase II - ECG Monitored Exercise Program
This is the conditioning phase of cardiac rehabilitation, on an outpatient basis. A supervised exercise program typically lasts 12 weeks, with one-hour exercise sessions three times a week. The program is designed to meet your individual needs, based on exercise tolerance testing. During exercise, you will be monitored by electrocardiograms and work on aerobic exercise equipment. You will also receive instruction about important lifestyle changes to achieve fullest recovery.
Our team will discuss:
- diet & nutrition
- weight control
- stress management
- smoking cessation
Phase III - Excercise Maintenance Program
To maintain the improvements you achieved during Phase II, you must continue your exercise program. You can use our outpatient facility, in a professional exercise setting. Staff will also provide training, support and encouragement to help make your improved health status a permanent lifestyle change.
Adult Fitness Phase
Individuals who do not have coronary artery disease, but who are at risk, may want to improve physical conditioning. This supervised program meets three to five times weekly. You will receive cardiac monitoring once monthly. This prevention-based program introduces you to a variety of aerobic conditioning exercises and weight training.
