FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (EASTON- April 28, 2010)

On March 16, the Upper Eastern Shore Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society (UESONS) presented awards to two Shore Health System nurses who have made contributions to the care of cancer patients. Barbara Bilconish, MSN, RN-BC, received the Outstanding Service Award, and Michele Williams, BSN, RN-BC, C, OCN, CHPN, received the Commitment to Caring Award.

The Outstanding Service Award is given to an ONS chapter member who has made outstanding contributions to the field of oncology nursing. To be eligible for the award, a nurse must be a member of the National Oncology Nursing Society and the Upper Eastern Shore chapter, and have at least two years of oncology nursing experience. Nominees are selected based on the impact they have on the care of oncology patients and their family members.

“The candidate we select to receive the Outstanding Service Award is an advocate for education in the domains of the patient, family, community and legislature,” explains Robin Ford, RN, UESONS president and chair of the award nominating committee. “The candidate must recognize the significance of continuing education, participate in activities for self-learning and regularly share knowledge with peers. We select a nurse who understands that oncology nursing is more than a science; it is an art that cares for the mind, body and spirit.”

Barbara Bilconish, a resident of East New Market, is the director of professional nursing practice and Magnet Program for Shore Health System. She was chosen by her peers and acknowledged for the many ways she serves oncology patients and the nurses who care for them. She successfully led Shore Health System to Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Magnet Recognition Program validates the exemplary level of nursing care provided by Shore Health System. Bilconish co-chairs the UESONS program committee, which plans learning opportunities that enhance everyday nursing practices

“The dedication Bilconish shows to educating nurses and her positive ‘can do’ attitude is an inspiration to all nurses at Shore Health System and within our professional organization,” Ford says.

Michele Williams of Trappe is pain and palliative care specialist for Shore Health System. She was nominated for the Commitment to Caring Award by a member of UESONS. This award was created by UESONS to honor an individual who recognizes the impact of cancer across the community and advocates for individuals, groups and community residents. The candidate must balance advocacy and support with self growth while fostering independence for patients and their families.

Williams was acknowledged for her dedication to patient care and for sharing her knowledge and clinical skills with the physicians and nurses with whom she works. She was instrumental in establishing the palliative care suites at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. These comfortable patient rooms and adjoining lounge provide a private environment for families whose loved ones have been diagnosed with a terminal disease.

Williams is a member of the Shore Health System Interdisciplinary Cancer Committee, which addresses the process of delivering care to oncology patients at Memorial Hospital, Dorchester General Hospital and Shore Regional Cancer Center.

Speaking on behalf of UESONS, Ford says, “Michele is a highly respected nurse who cares for oncology patients in a holistic manner. Through her exemplary commitment to caring, oncology patients receive excellent and compassionate care.”
